Bhagavad Gita for Students to Overcome Depression

by Sai Prashanthi Neelda

Bhagavad Gita is one of the important spiritual texts which lies in Mahabharata. It was narrated by Sri Krishna to Arjuna, where he refused to fight.  It is not only a spiritual text but also one of the best personality development books in the world.

How does it help students?

Students are the future of our country. They must be strong physically and mentally to overcome the hurdles of life.

So, it is more important to motivate children to be bold in life to face various struggles. Bhagavad Gita helps youngsters to find out their goals without confusion because when Arjuna got stuck up in confusion, Krishna motivated  by encouraging him about his real strength. Nowadays students need to understand what are strengths they have, and how to overcome weaknesses they are facing. When Krishna motivated him, and explained reality by each and every yoga, clarified his doubts, and showed Arjuna the dharma he had to perform. Students need the same way of counseling when they are facing many problems within the family and society.

How to overcome weakness?

Krishna said Arjuna

” klaibyam masmagama Partha

Naitatvayupapadyathe

Kshudram hridaya dourbalyam

Tyaktottista parantapa”

This means we must not allow weakness, laziness, and despondency in our life. We must encourage children that weakness, and despondency are not their qualities. We must always guide students that life will not always be smooth.

How to balance your mind during exams?

Krishna said that we must work for whatever we want. We must have perseverance, patience, and hard work to achieve success. It is our responsibility to perform our duties perfectly but not to worry about results.

When our efforts are perfect, results will be positive by themselves. During exams, children will get a lot of tension, stress and anxiety. We must guide them by the above words. We must make them strong that efforts are in our hands but results are not, but when we give it perfectly, results will be positive.

How to concentrate?

There will be one quality in people who are successful is shraddha, the determination to achieve. Krishna says in Gita that “shraddhavan labhathe jnanam”

The person who has the quality of shraddha will get knowledge, and those who have the knowledge, will become great in life.

Students need to understand the importance of shraddha to learn any of their subjects. First, we must encourage them to attain shraddha to learn academics with high concentration. In this regard, Swami Vivekananda used to say that we must train the minds of the children to attain knowledge.

The food we take, the things we see and hear, affect our mind. So Krishna said that we must take a balanced diet, which is satvik in nature. We must control our senses, what to see, what not to see.

So that our mind will be calm because everything we experience will create a wave in the mind. Students are exposed to various things like movies these days, whatever they see, will affect their mind and disturbs their concentration. So, they must be trained to balance their mind by yoga and meditation from childhood, so studies will not be affected. Balance of mind is very important to lead a balanced life.

Students are the future of the nation. They should be able to come forward for the development of the country. Gita is one of the best tools to develop the personality of young minds. Because we can see how Krishna molded the personality of Arjuna from the beginning, where he was depressed, unable to fight, to the end,he was ready to fight. Similarly, we can mold our future generations if we understand the gita from a student’s perspective.
