Why Math Teachers Are Excruciatingly Needed

by Sandra Bagadiong

Mathematics in general is considered the most polarizing subject after viewing the results of the survey that the Math Blab, a blog about Mathematics and Science. Due to the fact that mathematics got the highest percentage to the least favourite subject. However, mathematics was also considered the favourite subject behind the gym. Educators have been considerably underrated because of their notorious impatience or attitude towards their students. Specifically, the teachers in the department of Mathematics and Science. However, the educators in these fields are considered as one of the most necessary educators in our society. There is an in-demand for math teachers with over 30,000 unfilled teaching positions.

As a teacher, I often hear people stereotyping the profession I’ve chosen. And hearing those words are extremely painful to hear considering the fact that these people were the ones who benefited from our job, from our passion. However, I am not one to judge for I am not aware of what they are fighting for.  Admitting the fact that Mathematics is in between the fine line of the most hated and the most favourite subject, can be a bewildering statement to hear. Should I be flattered? Or should I be offended? Nonetheless, I appreciate the thought that people are using and giving their time to think through such things. I perceive that mathematics is a subject that people shouldn’t degrade just because they’ve gone through such traumatizing events that involve the subject. Mathematics is such a beautiful field to study and be interested in. In fact, it is the most logical and systematic field in the world. With its complexity that attracts you to study and scrutinize the field, emitting to you the wonders of numbers, problem-solving, analyzations, and equations that would make you wonder how such a thing works. Hence, many people are exploiting their time to study and resolve problems involving mathematics.

Be that as it may, mathematics’ complexity not only help us understand equations, algorithms, and its systematic way of learning; it also helps us scrutinize the depths of learning and lessons that are necessary for us to learn not only in the field of academics but also in the active fields of life. If you think that mathematics’ limitations end inside the big establishment of education, I beg your pardon about your notion on that part. As mentioned above, mathematics’ complexity is beyond anyone’s imagination. It doesn’t stick to one portion; it has vast areas that would surely stagger your mind. Mathematics prepares us to a wide range of uncertain impossibilities that the bigger world offers you.
