something breaks

all I’m trying to do
is put the clean dishes up.

but then
I hear a loud crash.

I turn around to see
the shattered remains
of a drinking glass
all over
the kitchen floor.

my girlfriend
walks in and asks,
“what was that?”

“it was just this
old glass”,
I say.

she starts to tear up
and tells me,
“that was the last gift
my grandma
ever got me.”

and that’s when I realize
how easy it is
to hurt someone
with nothing
but your own carelessness.
