The Locked Door

by Sowjanya M

It was a few days back, a normal morning, with my husband, kid, and mother. That day my husband had left for the office early. The little one had his morning glass of Horlicks and got busy with his morning coloring and scribbling session. I went out to get some groceries and vegetables. Everything was fine until after my mother went inside the bathroom to refill the liquid soap.

When she was about to come out she found that the door was stuck, she pushed and pulled but nothing happened. She first banged on the door and called out for the toddler who locked her from outside. She spoke sweetly so that he comes to terms and unlock the door as easily as he locked it. She yelled at him sullenly and called out neighbors so that they can walk in from the main door and open it for her, unfortunately, they had still not returned from the morning walk.

This tiny tot did not open the door, which otherwise he locks and unlocks causally and plays out of curiosity, of course with someone keeping an eye on him. On the other hand, his grandma did not take the usual precaution on that day, which she used to usually to ensure this naughty kid does not lock the door. He is the sweetest and obedient kid but that day was jackanapes.  Just as her panic started that, she might have kept the kitchen door open that will give easy access to this little one who can end up doing something grisly, they heard the footsteps.

I returned home after buying all that I wanted and found my kid chuckling and profoundly scribbling in his coloring book and starting calling out “Maa… Maaa… Amaaa” and my mother discreetly said “oh! Did mom come?” As she told me that this 3-year-old little terror is not opening the door while she was still inside, I unlocked it and we all burst into laughter. She had to stay in the bathroom for the whole time I was away. The good 30-40 minutes, which otherwise she would finish lots of chores, she spent it in the bathroom because of the locked door.

Later we discussed the ways to avoid such locked door situations and heard many such stories from our neighbors and friends. Although I laugh when I recall the situation of being locked up, it still gives chills down the spine and freaks me out thinking how it would be to have no clue about what the little one is up to, scary isn’t it?
