कल ख्वाब में सितमगर के गाल पे क़लाम रख दिया

आव देखा ना ताव हमने लाल सलाम रख दिया

गद्दार की साफ़-गोई की भला और होगी क्या नज़ीर

हम रखते इससे पहले खुद ही अपना नाम रख दिया

उस रोज़ जो सुना बाग़ीयों की नफरतों का शोरगुल

होश उड़ गए यूं के हमने अपना जाम रख दिया

टुकड़ों में बांटकर जो हैं बोली लगाने को बेक़रार

सौदागरों ने मुल्क का जाने क्या दाम रख दिया

बिगड़ी बने तो क्या सूरत-ए-हाल हो यूं जिधर

चोर ने उलटे कोतवाल ही पर इल्ज़ाम रख दिया

जो पूछे कोई हमसे रोज़-ए-हश्र की दास्ताँ

रो रो कर हमने अपना हाल-ए-तमाम रख दिया

सोये रहे किधर वो जो हैं तअस्सुब के झंडाबरदार

ख़बर नहीं लगी किसी ने जो अपना ईनाम रख दिया

Translation

Last night, in dream, I fixed a stamp over the tyrant’s cheek

 Losing no time to contemplate I just gave him the taste of ‘Laal Salaam’

Could there be any other instance of a Tyrant’s such frankness

 That even before the nation would take call he himself appropriated the ‘title’ to him

(Context: ‘Yes, I am anti national’ article by a famous journalist)

That evening when I heard the clamour of hateful seditionists

 I lost my senses in a way I kept aside my drink in disgust

Those willing to lacerate into pieces to make bids thereupon

 God knows what price tag have the agents fixed for the nation

How would one resolve the state of affairs where

 The thief lays accusation upon the ‘Kotwaal’ instead

When someone asked me about the ordeal of the fateful day

 I unburdened myself crying hysterically

Where were they sleeping all the while, ‘the flag bearers of intolerance ’

 I did not hear of even one who returned the award this time around
