Footprints and Echoes

She walked away to the far west
leaving her footprints as fresh as morning dew
as if she gonna leave me forever to the hinterland
the reasons I shall search through myself,

I can faintly hear the echo of her heartbeat
giving me hope and millions of reason to smile
for she is still breathing and she may return anytime soon,

With excitement, I follow her footprint
Carefully listening if I can still hear that echo
Wishing to catch her somewhere before she crosses the horizon far beyond my reach,

Time is ticking around at greater speed never felt before
Energy is draining out slowly and my feet get heavier
as if the gravity is pulling it harder than before
But I am determined not to stop until I catch her,

I completely lost sight of her footprint
and the echo of her heartbeat is silenced
I have nowhere to go other than to return to the place from where I started,

Every morning I look at the eastern sky
expecting the rising sun to bring me a smile
but to my utter dismay, it only appears with its usual glow
without any sign of someone coming back,

Finally, I realized our path and destination were different
I have blindly followed the footprints
I have easily trusted the mysterious echo of a heartbeat
Those footprints and echoes of a heartbeat were just an illusion never designed for me.
