Ficfun

by Rabindra Soni

“What is the name of your paper “? Asked he. ” Ficfun sir, ficfun.” Said a student pronouncing the letter ‘s’ as ‘f’ perhaps had some difficulty. I wasn’t interested in their little talk so I got on my work and then I didn’t pay any attention to my surroundings for a while. I started to fill in the necessary details of my test copy as I only had the copy and the papers were being distributed to students.

All students were shouting and disturbing the invigilator. At one time he got really furious but didn’t express anything and just continued to distribute but just then a student entered the class whistling which drove the teacher crazy. He made him out and fleetingly the whole class became pin-drop silent. Everyone was just amazed to see the teacher’s daring. Suddenly a peculiar voice broke the silence and by hearing everyone in the class burst into laughter but I was a little surprised as I didn’t understand him clearly, again he said innocently “fir my paper fir I’m in fecond femefter fir fecond femefter”.

Now I couldn’t stop my chuckle. I was wondering who could be this student because he was pronouncing ‘f’ as ‘s’ which meant he was telling about fiction. I, at first ignored him but now I became curious to know who he was because he was from my class. So I turned my head around where this young boy was standing by the bench wearing a college uniform. His hair was hanging on his forehead so was his Identity Card on the neck he then lifted his card to show the teacher his class. Everyone was giggling and chuckling intermittently on the other hand  I was still unable to recognize him because he was in a distant corner. I could see only his sturdy stature but of course not the face. He was waiting for his paper and the teacher was still puzzled despite having seen his card  but was not able to decide which paper he wanted to have shortly one of our classmates said loudly “sir he wants fiction sir paper of fiction.” The teacher gave him the paper grimacingly as if he had some doubts about something. As I had many doubts which were not solved.

I still didn’t know who was this guy whom I knew well but could not recognise him at all. Shortly after when his paper was handed to him by the teacher, he waved his hand to me and gave me the prettiest smile then I was agape to see who he was ! he was my best friend but why he was speaking like that. Ever since we were befriended I never got a clue he had this way of speaking. I knew pretty sure that he didn’t have this way of articulation. So the question here was posed why he was speaking like that. He again smiled at me and I could see his semi-circle wrinkle that fell around the tips of his lips. Now I was just writing with this confusion but it didn’t affect my paper. I finished my paper off on time and then again a voice shot like an arrow but this time I cracked up and enjoying the whole situation. “Fignature fir fignature I want to fign fir pleaf fir ” he said nonchalantly. I now understood his whole story behind it.

He was just mimicking one of our classmates because the day before this day he fought my best friend for no reason however he was off today. Upon hearing what my friend said the teacher was feeling a little bit frustrated but didn’t say a word and believed that my friend had this type of articulation. Now almost everyone finished their test and I  went outside after submitting my test copy but on the other hand, my friend was still having his fic fun. Now last time I heard him saying to the teacher” fir my copy pleaf fubmit fir fubmit .” The teacher didn’t say anything but his feelings of despair could be read through his face. I knew he didn’t mean to irritate the teacher he just wanted to have fic fun in fiction that’s all. We really had ficfun.
