What Do We Care

By Sudha Dixit

Most common and typical Indian sentiment is, as long as my interest is looked after “what do I care”. Their selfishness does not allow them to think or see beyond themselves. Modi is working overtime. The agenda is ‘development’. Development does not happen in one day. It takes time. A child takes years to grow. Any amount of vitamins or good food would not make him tall or big quickly. Political parties take advantage of people’s weakness. Naïve politician, like Congress head kept harping on Modi’s faults. He had no agenda. People rejected him. Arvind Kejriwal, too, began with blaming central government for his inactions. People laughed at him. Being an IIT person and a shrewd politician he stopped that and played with Delhi people’s vulnerability. He started distributing freebies. Lo and behold the greed of people won him laurels.

What Delhiites do not understand is that this is a bribe that gives them a tag of being lazy. Forget laziness, they voted for freebies ,this puts a question mark on their self respect. India is the only country where people beg because they do not want to work. Indians lack civic sense also. They, still, not learnt to save water. They use it with care when it’s rationed to them. They also careful when they pay for it. free water means ‘use without discretion’. Water shortage is a global problem. I have been to Italy. The hotels, there, asked us to use towels for two days and use water minimally. Same in Perth, Australia. In India people waste water if they don’t pay for it or if they can use and go away. Delhi people would consume all their quota of water thinking it’s their birth right. Same mentlity for electricity.

Coming to education; in theory it’s a commendable move. Just imagine, kids who did not care to study when their parents were spending their hard earned money on their education, would they take it seriously if it’s free. Even parents would not care now. What a waste. Only good thing is health care segment. People don’t fall ill even if treatment is free.

Apparently AAP did good governance. But it only catered to people’s greed. It did not do anything to rectify JNU. It did not explain and support CAA and NRC. It had a duty to educate its people about the necessity of these two Acts. AAP has done only politics of appeasement. Modi is taking risk by doing everything which is not populist but which is in national interest. But who cares. I would like to recite a couplet-

‘Uske qatlpe main bhi chup tha,

             Mera number ab aaya

Mere qatl pet aap bhi chup hain

Agla number aapk hai

[I was silent on his murder

Now it’s my turn

You are quiet at my murder,

Next in line is you]
