Chef Report – Shyam Lal College, University of Delhi

Shyam Lal College, University of Delhi proudly and successfully hosted the fourth edition of SLC University Chef 2019 in association with Bright flames, a culinary competition on 28th February and 1st March, 2019. In this inter-college competition, 17 teams representing various colleges of DU, Delhi/NCR and other states participated exhibiting their culinary arts. The convener, Mr. Abbasuddin Tapadar and co-convener Dr. Supriti Mishra convened the competition by felicitating the Principal, Dr. Rabi Narayan Kar and the jury members- the celebrity Chef Nita Mehta, Chef Mukesh Kumar, Chef Veeta Singh and Master Chef Fame, Master chef india fame Chef Jatin Khurana.

The Jury oriented the participants of culinary ethics and aesthetics and gave some valuable tips about how to express oneself through this art and how to make the best of limited ingredients. The Principal, Dr. Rabi Narayan Kar and the Jury members dedicated the Competition to the martyrs of Pulwama attack. Dr. Kar said that as a chef one can participate in nation building by serving the army. Chef Veeta encouraged the young participants by asking them to transform the adrenaline rush into a creative art and use it to exhibit their culinary art.

On 28th February, the first day, the participants were judged at three levels: plating skills, experiment with nachos and a mystery box with secret ingredients. The participants showcased their talent and were critically appreciated by the judges. The Jury decided not to eliminate any participant as the aim was to encourage the art among the youth.

On 1st March, the second day, the theme was Indian regional cuisine where the participants were asked to prepare a full three-course meal.

The winner slot was claimed by the team Ravleen and Asmita of Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi, while team Ruqayya and Namra from Laxmi Bai College, University of Delhi and team Vasant and Surender from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, bagged second and third positions respectively.

This competition is an annual feature organised by Shyam lal college and is the only one in Delhi University.
