Of Math And Men

By Mark Antony Rossi

Beware of the bean counters they respect little but soulless digits that dance across their ledger sheet. Number crunchers choose distance because they are in love with process. They distrust flesh and blood. They embrace the comfort of contrasts rather than the grays of personal gravity. Their very demeanor is robotic and calculating for its gives them comfort to cast judgement on the inconsistencies of others.

The mechanical among us do not give quarter to men. The human element is deemed weak. Humanity seldom meets exacting standards. Love and logic are ancient enemies. Soldiers of the System must fit you into a box today or bury you in a box tomorrow. Theirs is a world of macro madness disguised as program security. But no man is safe in a society that views freedom as a threat and deems independent thought as a radical challenge to prevailing norms.

This behavior for lack of a better term is often called political. However; that term is a misnomer and doesn’t adequately describe the true depth of what occurs when common sense is discarded in favor of power-soaked prejudice. The authority of good management is tainted by bad corporate leadership. And those who carry out unethical decisions travel the road to Nuremberg. And cannot blame others for executing mindless math over meaningful fellowship.

Technology continues to aid the bloodless bullies using policy to subjugate people yearning for fair treatment yet instead pummeled with techno-babble and cowardly-couched language meant to lessen understanding and finally lessen human value in the cosmic equation of dignified existence in the world. As democratic institutions erode, I suspect democracy will slip away into the night and what will emerge are bean counters, Yes Men and overly-militarized police forces all servicing central government rather than human liberty. You need to stand up now. Tomorrow will cost you a far greater price.

About the Author: Mark Antony Rossi is a poet, playwright and author of the bioethics volume “Dark Tech” now available from Amazon. His most recent plays have been produced in Liverpool and New York.

  1. Democracy is at its peril in the hands of power-hungry people at the helm of affairs!
We’re at a loss to know whether technology is a boon or bane!
Humans are considered the bran of the cereal, and made to wither!
But ‘bran’ is the real powerful stuff than the cereals themselves, which we often heaitate to come to terms with!
    Glory to the human values!
