By Anuradha S. Bannore

As You Sow So Shall You Reap!
‘Listen Deesha’

‘What is it Kusum? I’m getting late for work so you had better hurry up and say whatever you wish to’

‘Come here, what’s the hurry?’

‘Why, do you have something important to say?’

‘Yes, otherwise why would I call you here?’

‘Ok. So tell me what has befallen on your head now? What’s the problem?’

‘Something terrible has happened. Some people are slandering my reputation’

‘Look Kusum, don’t talk in riddles. Come directly to the point. What’s happened?’

‘You see I’d gone to Ujjain on a pilgrimage and some people have spread lies about me that I’m involved in some kind of illegal work. Now you only tell me sister does it befit anyone to spread such baseless lies about others?’

Deesha smiled sarcastically and said,’ Why do you bother about such things–it’s some people’s passtime slinging mud at others? If you haven’t done anything wrong then give a deaf ear to such nonsense.’

‘You are right in saying so but what about my reputation? People will believe the lies to be true. I’ll be defamed.’
Deesha spoke sarcastically,’Kusum, you too speak tons of lies about others. Why didn’t you think about their reputation at that time?’

This irritated Kusum to the core and very angrily she retorted,’Oh God, you are blaming me! What an inconsiderate thing to say!’

‘ Ok Kusum, that’s enough, let’s go. Today I’m quite late and Missie will be very angry with me.’

‘Oh sister, please listen to my complete story’

‘Oh my God! Let’s leave something for tomorrow.’

Kusum, who was bent on narrating the whole story firmly gripped Deesha’s hand and whispered,’ Don’t tell this to anyone, actually I’d gone to the police station in search of a job.’

‘So did you get a job there?’

‘Yes, they hired me to look after the prisoners’

‘That’s good Kusum. Now you will get a handsome salary.’

Kusum looked far from happy and said in a low tone,’ I’ll tell you the truth but keep it to yourself’

Impatiently Deesha said,’Listen Kusum, keep your lies and nonsense to yourself. You have been driving me nuts for the past hour. If you want to tell me then do so otherwise let’s go our way.’

‘Actaually I did get involved in some illegal work and unfortunately got caught. The people for whom I did it escaped while I landed behind the bars.’

Deesha and others knew that Kusum was a very big liar and involved in assorted illegal works.

Deesha said, ‘Ok so you were imprisoned for the past fifteen days. How did you like being there in your new sasural (in-laws place)? You must have enjoyed a lot of sweet meats too. No wonder you have become so round.’ She could no longer restrain herself and burst out laughing loudly. Suddenly she quietened down and said, ‘Kusum, hope you haven’t told this to anyone else’

Very hesitatingly she said,’ Just to two-three friends only’

Hitting her forehead Deesha said,’ You have been absolutely stupid to do so. You, yourself have proclaimed about where you were so now what ever you have done you have to bear its outcome. Don’t try to put the noose of your lies around other people’s neck. Don’t hold them responsible for your own doings. There’s still time Kusum, you had better reform yourself before it’s too late–otherwise even God, The Almighty won’t be able to save you and then what will happen to you, you can’t even imagine.’

Deesha quickly slipped away from there saying ‘Jai Ramji’ Kusum being uncontrollably furious (with Deesha) started plans for taking her revenge by punishing Deesha in the worst possible manner.

Karma plays a very significant role in our life. It spares no one! Each one of us has to bear the cosequences of our doings. There’s no escape from it.
