On Mahakavi Bharathiyar’s Memorial Day

By N. V. Subbaraman, Chennai

It was on 11th September 1921 that Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiyar reached his heavenly abode. In his memory, here is my poem original in Tamil, its transliteration and translation in English.

Someone asked me why Mahakavi was not awarded BHARATHA RATHNA posthumous and my reply was there is no political pressure on the powers that be !!

TRANSLATION

BRIGHT SUN CALLED BHARATHI WAS BORN!

Bright Sun called Bharathi was born

          Awakened the masses of ignorance

He led the people as if Lord Krishna

He spread our greatness all over the world!

Each song that Bharathi gave

Individual sea of milk for those on earth

Every one born on this earth

To keep in his lips as divine veda

Each poem that Bharathi wrote

Instills valor and courage in one’s heart

To read every morning and evening

It is the song that wipes out all fears from mind!

The crux of the Geetha given by Lord Krishna

Could be seen clear and keen in Bharathi’s songs

He sang of the Nation, he sang of the home

Sang the strategies for daily life and living!

Sang of the earth, he sang of the sky

Showed the noble path of humanism

Sang of the crow, he sang of the sparrow

Sang in style of the greatness of human life!

Sang of the morning, he sang of the evening

Sang for one to enjoy all his life!

Sang of the grace, he sang of the wealth

He sang of the goings in the world!

Sweetly told of what is good for the land

The truth he knows shared aloud with all!

He added glory to the globe with benefit

He gave exalted position to the women and womanhood!

He sang of nature and sang of artificiality

He showed the path of graceful living

He sang of womanhood, sang of coolness and calmness

Sang of all truths realizing in toto.

To see a poet equivalent to Bharathi

To ensure peace fully on earth

Human beings to live in all glory

Will be on the day when the Sun raises in the West!

With all these, I have a guilty conscience that I have not fully projected the greatness of MAHAKAVI SUBRAMANIYA BHARATHIYAR whom I consider as the one along with Thiruvalluvar and Mahatma Gandhi who guides me the moment I step out of my home and I bring back to my home holding and supporting me with their divine  and noble hands.

  1. A nice poem on BHARATHIAR . Your Tamil poem is very simple and easy to understand and with full of energy. Bharathiar did not leave any object in his subject . He had a deep interest in the beauty of nature. He had plenty of time to see and enjoy the beauty of all things and he could give the beautiness in his poetic words of high imagination.

Your translation is excellent and again in so simple easy English words even an elementary school boy will easily understand and enjoy.

Only one thing comes to my mind. Bharathiar dreamt as if INDEPENDENCE was achieved even before 30 years from 15-08-1947. His dreams came true and we could win our freedom at mid night. Your final lines of poem showed your extreme worriness about the future days
You said only when the Sun raises in the west it is possible to see the peace and glory. Sun will never raise in the West. It is the natural gift of GOD.

I pray the ALMIGHTY to bring peace and glory even in this KALIYUGA and if HE Desires it is all possible.

Thanking you sir for allowing me to say a few words on my own.

    Yours affectionately ,

    G.Vasudevan
