Mahakavi Bharathiyar’s “Knowledge Alone is God”

By N.V.Subbaraman from Chennai, India

Mahakavi Bharathiyar, great  patriot and national Poet  with his sterling songs in Tamil, roused the peoples conscience towards, Motherland, its freedom, Mother Tongue, its greatness,  Woman’s lib, its need and sanctity, social evils, need to eradicate and so on during the short span of 39 years of his life (11-12-1882 to 11 -9   -1921).

He was proud of his Motherland-India that is Bharath- its hoary culture and civilization, achievements of the ancient land and sang in praise that made everyone take pride and serve the nation.

He is equally conscious of the essential needs of the human beings physically, mentally, intellectually, spiritually and so on. He is nonetheless a fierce critic of superstitious beliefs, illogical and irrational thoughts.

Here is a beautiful poem condemning  superstitious beliefs and firmly holds that “KNOWLEDGE ALLONE IS GOD”  in his original Tamil, its transliteration and translation into English and a comment.

Original in Tamil:

KNOWLEDGE ALONE IS GOD!

Oh, foolish people going here and there

In search of God –can’t you hear

Myriad scriptures declaring

Knowledge alone is God!      (1)

Carried away, you senseless people, by

Bull-God, Hunter –God and wood-God

When it is said clear that Awareness

Pervading Universe is God- Knowledge alone is!   (2)

Listen to the shruthis, -oh people stumbling

In the creeds different- that say “shiva is pure

Awareness and believing in false values

And beliefs that come from sides various!    (3)

Million forms he Vedas say

Million names and forms

Manifestations of one Supreme-sole being

Know not whether you believe in full!     (4)

VedAS-Sacred Scriptures

Confirm the sacred truth

God is knowledge-having

Manifestations millions!    (5)

The wise and the noble realized

One sole being- everything and all

You and I mistake appearances-illusion

For and as reality permanent!     (6)

All states of mind and moods are the same

Of single supreme Shakthi the power

Vedanta at its best revealed

PEACE –Shanthi – goal to be reached!    (7)

Home becomes Heaven when man lives

Sans any sorrows and sufferings says the Vedas

No meaning in taking husk as rice and

Taking as food delicious sound!     (8)

The SELF is the light that shines bright

In all the living beings- one’s soul

Don’t you hear what our scriptures say

Bramham it is very clear and boldly we can say!     (9)

No need to collect stories collecting Gods

To stand against false beliefs quite odds

And preaching to the public

Who know not KNOWLEDGE alone is God!

Sole Bramman is awareness

That is what all I need to know

True being indeed is awareness

All I need to realize with frankness!       (10)

MAHAKAVI BHarathiyar is very clear in his views on God and religion and is convinced that KNOWLEDGE ALONE IS GOD as beautifully narrated in this celestial song!

(To be continued)

One Comment

  1. O K R Sivagnanam

Bharathiyar’s Knowledge alone is God explains the power of knowledge over superstitious beliefs that firmly embrace the minds of people, and refuse to leave them!

Seeking the God’s intervention coupled with one’s genuine efforts for happy ending is good, but definitely not the mere faith not accompanied with reasonable awareness!

Let us not be seekers of God, believing that alone is sufficient for our well being!

A nice translation of the work of Mahakavi Bharathiyar!
