Paris Discord in the Rearview Mirror

By Mark Antony Rossi

America’s departure from the so-called “Paris Accords” was an inevitable ethical act from a political movement that seeks greater accountability of how taxes are spent and a fairer trade balance from partners who often suffer from financial amnesia.

It is lost upon my friends in foreign lands that Obama never got the Paris Accords ratified by the US Congress. This very important step is necessary if America is going to accept and live by an agreement. Thus, Obama slyly labeled this Treaty an Accord to make it appear like America agreed and the whole world fell in love with symbolism instead of the reality of acceptance.

The Paris Accords needed to be discarded by a sensible administration that cannot abide by rules and regulations that hamper American financial and political institutions for a theoretical dream most nations still haven’t made a national priority. It allows developing nations to continue to pollute the planet while requiring “richer’’ nations to cut back on manufacturing industry and pay billions to poorer nations to help their global climate struggle.

Why is such an agreement considered a fair and reasonable mechanism to improve the world if only a fraction of its 195 signatories are called to do anything for the world other than stand ready to receive money from the designated developed nations? It would have been more accurate to call this the Paris Global Tax because that is exactly what it will sadly mutate into.

From my stand point America has not withdrew from anything since it never truly signed on in the first place. Part of the ratification of the US Congress is to debate and bring for public examination an Accord that is anti-business, anti-common sense, ironically anti-environment and ultimately anti-American. There can be a better agreement crafted by all nations if we are truly seeking planetary health and not just another wedge to beat up on competitors.

If the word Global is ever going to mean universal it must adhere to complete cooperation and not become another marketing term too many will ignore. And if the Environment is ever going to be taken seriously again by the average citizen it must be considerate of Industry as much as the Indian Elephant. Otherwise we risk the future of a fragile planet because we are unwilling to be honest with one another.

Environment is the most neglected the world over, and our contribution has made it unable to recover for the better!
It’s all good with accords and agreements, provided all the stakeholders act in unison to attain the goal of environment in its natural form!
Launching campaigns without actually meaning it, is a gimmick of the worst order!
It’s the responsibility of one and all to take it as a challenge and give the best to extricate the environment from the rubbish it’s in!
Transforming the world as a healthier place is our duty as of now, and it’ll naturally take care of other aspects!
