In continuation of my article on Bharathiyar in the 12th February issue of INDIAN PERIODICALS, we are going to have Part 2 dealing with Bharathiyar’ s obeisance to the Goddess of Learning and knowledge –SARASWATHI.

. Mahakavi Bharathiyar has sung in praise of GODDESS SARASWATHI in his epic poem PANJALI SABATHAM based on the Indian epic Mahabharatha. Two of his songs in original and my translation in English are given in this week’s Indian Periodical.

Sits on the petals of white lotus
Dwelling in splendid and great status
Great melodious music she likes
Keeps that stringed organ veena in hands
Similar to great divine nectar
To pour Tamil words in her altar
Right from my childhood she came and blessed
To take care of me, my skills well dressed! (1)

In English

On the petals of white lotus

She is seated majestically.

Melodious songs quite sweet flow

From her lovely stringed instrument veena

Like intoxicating nectar from seas

With her beautiful Tamil songs and music

In my days of childhood pleasant

She came and nurtured me with her grace.

With eyes of scriptures-the Vedas

Her eyebrows brushed with black color

Her lips were like sun rays and beams

Thoughts noble were her hair

Her ears for logic and discussions

Her ear stead was will power and moral strength

Her nose was knowledge

Her mouth filled with noble laws of life.

  1. O K R Sivagnanam

A bautiful narration of Bharathiyar’s prayer to the Goddess of Learning to whom he owes everything he created including Panchali Sabatham!

To him every organ of Saraswathi stood for special qualities that help the human beings in discharge of their different vocations successfully!
So long as HER grace is ensured, people in all walks of life will be able to bring out their best in executing the tasks they have chosen for themselves!
Rather it’s their unshakable faith that the Goddess Saraswathi Herself is the actual performer on their behalf!
