Vigilance is a Firm Hand

By Mark Antony Rossi

I like to keep score. But I’m often surprised when I find the good people outnumber the bad people and still evil prevails. How is this possible? Why do bad things happen especially to good people? The cynic cries in the street “only the good die young.” Slyly implying evil is stronger and outlasts the limited powers of good. The Pollyanna student of virtue proclaims to the crowd “good is stronger than evil.” never truly explaining the reasoning behind this belief.

If for argument’s sake, we remove the spiritual elements of good and evil we are left with an unsexy but staggering truth: like everything else in the universe good and evil win or lose based on their numerical superiority. The good lament about the victory of evil yet seldom accept responsibility for their inaction that gives license to iniquity. It only takes a few good people to stop the wrongs of the world or look the other way as wickedness runs unopposed.

This simple equation explains the world and the direction it is speeding towards. Burn your candles if you must. Make prayer and fasting a daily ritual. But when evil steps upon the stage in your community you cannot hurl impractical clichés and expect tangible results.

Evil is a negative commitment but a commitment nevertheless and this is the deep seated dilemma with humanity at the moment. Thieves are more excited about stealing than we are about earning. Liars believe their fantasies more than we believe our childhood values. Our enemies have more zeal about death than we do about life.

If we truly want the world to be a better place we need a proactive plan to confront evil whenever it rears its jealous head. On a planet where men are burned alive in steel cages, the nice guy doesn’t finish last — he IS finished and with him the hope for a peaceful tomorrow. The firm hand is the price of vigilance and possibly the only method to rebuild a world lit a fire by faithless fools.

  1. thank you Mr. Rossi for your very positive approach to this problem of the good and the evil.
I suppose it all began with Adam and Eve’s Fall from paradise when Satan tempted Eve with the forbidden apple and God chucked them from paradise also from the story of Pandora’s Box for opening the forbidden item
Yes. good and evil are like the two sides of your palm or a coin as is better expressed
i know and have read about good Samaritans who have come forward to prevent evil and have either been stabbed or locked behind bars.
I think poverty is the worst culprit for such evil happenings

  2. Very gratifying to hear the impact of ethical thoughts upon a world in dire need. Thanks for your support.
