Scam, Deaths and Justice in India’s Heartland

By The Editor: Siddharth Sehgal

Scams are not new to the Indian public, it’s a sort of given that every now and then some politician’s “Kali Kartoot”(misdeeds) will come out in open. But what made Vyapam a national shocker is the level of bloodbath that had taken place in the wake of this scam.  People hardly hear anything about Madhya Pradesh in news and its CM also avoids the lime light at most but in past few weeks both the state and Shivraj Sing Chouhan are at the front page of every newspaper and media outlet.

The Vypam scam, which earlier on didn’t receive much attention even in MP, is now a national eyesore. The Governor of the state is one of the alleged involved but his office and post came in the way of prosecution. How can young men in their twenties, who have anything to do in this matter, end up dying of natural causes or road accidents? It doesn’t look mysterious to normal people, it looks like a cover up. The rising death toll has put people, politicians and media on its toes. Investigating these deaths should be the priority in this matter because if witnesses, investigators would continue to be silenced in these fashions then who would cooperate or even think of talking with the CBI. Few whistleblowers have risked everything to take up this fight ahead and it’s good that media spotlight might give them some relative safety which law can’t provide them.  They have been attacked, threatened and abused at every step yet government can only afford a constable for one of the activists.

The CBI probe ordered by the Supreme Court should divulge secrets of those involved and may be get some justice to the diseased but in all honest terms it look like a long shot to get justice at this level of corruption. Thousands paid others to sit in exam for them and thousands mores might have reaped crores out if this swindle. Big names are claimed to be involved in this and the saddest part of all this is bloodiest drama are the deaths. Innocent journalists, deans, cops and activists who are trying to unearth the reality are found dead all of a sudden for no apparent reason besides having a link to Vyapam case. Truth is a fact but lies are speculative, no one will know how many of the dead are actual natural causes but the argument that all 36, 48 or whatever the number, are death under natural circumstances, is not going to fly with people.

BJP can’t dodge the bullet at all times, people point finger at father for son’s actions and its high time their senior leadership take notice of the controversies their ministers are involved in. Saying that PM should not speak on such silly issues or bragging superiority over the question of dead journalist is utter inaptness, somebody has to answer all this. Time will tell what will happen to the accused and the accuser but this scam has already become another unsightly stain on Indian politics.
